It’s
excitement for most veteran fans and curiosity for many younger
fans. Those are the emotions surrounding the New England Dodge
Dealers Whelen Modified Tour (WMT) 75-lap main event presented by
Charter Cable, Internet, and Telephone. This short distance, hard
charging, 75 green flag lap race on Thursday, June 19th is the talk
of the New England racing community.
The entry list of WMT competitors grows ever day and an impressive
field of NASCAR Whelen Modifieds is expected to be on hand for this
very special event. For many, this race is reminiscent of the
‘golden era’ of Modified racing in New England when the “ground
pounders” ran similar events three or four night a week. Each night,
those events proved to be hard charging, flat out racing from start
to finish. This Thursday, June 19th, will be the first time such a
race has been run by the WMT in some 23 years.
Leading the competitors will be Chuck Hossfeld. Hossfeld is the
current points leader on the Tour. He will be joined by the winner
of this year’s Thompson Icebreaker, Ed Flemke, Jr. Additional
entrants include Mike Stefanik, Jimmy Blewett, Todd Szegedy, James
Civali, Matt Hirschman and many, many more of the top competitors in
NASCAR’s oldest and fastest division.
As part of the NASCAR year-long celebration of sixty years of
champions, the 1992 title holder, Jeff Fuller, will return to
Thompson to be honored for his championship year. The brief ceremony
will take place just prior to the first feature event of the
evening. Jeff will also have the opportunity to say hello to his
many Thompson fans.
Joining the WMT on this very special night of racing will be
Thompson’s “Super Six” NASCAR Whelen All American Series divisions
in feature only racing. These exciting racing divisions provide fans
with edge-of-the-seat competition each and every Thursday night at
Thompson.
Grandstands will open at 2 PM on Thursday, June 19th. Practice will
run until 5:15 PM and will be followed by time trials for the WMT at
5:30 PM. Once time trials have been completed, feature event racing
will begin with the New England Dodge Dealers WMT 75 presented by
Charter Cable, Internet and Telephone slated to take the green flag
at about 8:15 PM. The entire day’s schedule is posted on the
Thompson International Speedway web page.
