CHASING MILLER STARTS AT CARAWAY

Tim Brown quest for his first NASCAR championship started off with the season's first Coors Light pole.
Brown posted a lap of 15.829 seconds (103.481 mph) around the .455-mile Caraway Speedway to earn the pole for the season opening Whelen Southern Modified 150 Saturday afternoon. Brown went out 31st out of the record 33 cars that took time for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified race, which was scheduled to take the green flag at 8 p.m. Saturday. He edged George Brunnhoezle III (15.878/103.162) and Robert Loftin (15.922/102.877).
"We had a real good practice and didn't even put stickers on," said Brown, who won his fifth career pole. "We had a real good hot rod. We just freed it up (for qualifying) and stepped on the gas. That's a great way to start the season."
The top eight qualifiers re-drew for starting position and Gary Fleming, who qualified eighth, redrew the top starting spot. Defending champion L.W. Miller qualified seventh and redrew second.
    Brown will start sixth.
