BRIAN LOFTIN SCORES SATURDAY NIGHT
VICTORY AT BOWMAN GRAY STADIUM
Brian Loftin had one of the most successful drivers at Bowman Gray
Stadium behind him. And he kept him there all night.
Loftin (No. 23 L&R Transmission/QMF Solutions Chevrolet) led every
lap en route to winning the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour's
Advance Auto Parts 199 at Bowman Gray. Burt Myers ran second for the
entire race, which was extended to 202 laps by a green-white-checkered
finish. Myers (No. 1 JRC Investments Ford) had won two of three tour
races at the historic .25-mile oval and has three titles in the track's
weekly Modified division.
"It seemed like every wreck happened right in front of us, where we
had to drive through it," said Loftin, who was in contention for the
lead at Bowman Gray last year before a late-race incident. "We were owed
this one and we cashed in."
Loftin qualified seventh but started on the pole after redrawing
the top spot during the post-qualifying draw of the top eight
qualifiers.
It's Loftin's eighth career victory, second straight this season
and his first visit to Victory Lane at Bowman Gray. It's been nearly
four months since Loftin's win at Caraway Speedway in Asheboro , N.C. ,
April 12. Since that event, the tour has been rained out three times.
Tim Brown (No. 83 Triad Auto Sales/Hayes Jewelers Chevrolet)
finished third, followed by Bobby Hutchens and Andy Seuss.
Point leader L.W. Miller ran into trouble all night. Miller, who
started third, was caught up in a multi-car wreck in Turn 1 of the first
lap and wound up with the rear of his car on top the car of Brian King.
Miller was given a drive-through penalty for a rough driving later in
the race. He made both laps up as the free-pass car on subsequent
cautions and drove his way back to eighth.
