If sometimes weather can throw a curve ball at racing event promotions, it
appears Mother Nature had lobbed a “softball” for the 1st Annual “Frost Bite
Modified Winter Nationals” set for this Friday and Saturday at Orange County
Speedway in Rougemont, NC. An early March snow storm dumped several inches
of snow on North Carolina Sunday night but by Friday morning that should be
nothing but a memory as forecasters are predicting highs in the 70’s for the
weekend. This should help everyone who is wavering on attending the races to
pull out the short sleeve shirts and load up for the first Modified race in
the South for 2009.
Ticket sales have been brisk but the promise of warm, sunny skies
will always bring out the fans after a long cold off-season and this event
should go a long way towards curing the cabin-fever suffered by area race
fans.
The “Josh Jenkins Memorial 125” is the feature event for the “Frost
Bite” and is set for Saturday afternoon with a strong entry list of some of
the best Modified pilots from the North and South set to take the green flag
at 2:00 PM. The event is a points race for the ASA / Southern Modified Race
Tour.
The South is represented by past SMART Champions, Jay Foley and
Burt Myers along with Jason Myers Greg Butcher, Scott Rigney, Ricky Knapp,
George Brunnhoelzl, III, Darrell Krentz, Josh Nichols and several more
southern regulars. Entries from the North include two-time “North-South
Shootout” winner, Matt Hirschman along with Charlie and Carl Pasteryak,
Tommy Farrell, III, Ronnie Silk, Rowan Pennink, Tony Hanbury and Jimmy
Zacharias. David Cranmer and Rob Schultz are also entered in the event as
well.
A late entry from nearby Danville, VA is Modified newcomer Barry
Dalton. Dalton has purchased a car from C. J. Jones and with help from
Hillbilly Racing (Roger & David Hill) and Jay Foley has tested over 350
miles at Virginia International Raceway. Dalton plans to make his first
Modified start at the “Frost Bite”. Dalton will donate his race winnings to
three charities. 1/3 to the Josh Jenkins Fund, 1/3 to St. Jude’s Children’s
Hospital and 1/3 to his local church to help offset some medical bills from
a close friend battling cancer.
