SPENCER SPEEDWAY CAN BE CALLED THE “NEW” LADY IN BLACK,
TRACK PAVING COMPLETED |
The major repaving project at Spencer Speedway and Dragstrip are now
completed.
“We were able to put an inch and a half of treated asphalt all the
way around the oval track and down the sections of the front stretch drag
strip”, stated promoter John White.
The photo team of Rigby and Starsmore were able to put together a
complete “photo essay” of the process used. These pictures can be found at
www.spencerspeedway.org, and then select the photo section. On the
second page of the Rigby/Starsmore oval page an entry for 10-21-09 can be
found. Nearly 100 pictures of the repaving can be found there, including the
milling process that took place about a month ago.
This is the first new surface the track has seen since 1964. That
work was done throughout the summer months and only three specials were run
that year in August. Two were won by Chuck Boos and one by Roger Boas. This
year also marked the first appearance of modified cars at Spencer Speedway,
replacing the reliable sportsman cars.
The track remains in the same configuration it has for many years,
a flat half mile oval.
“We still have a few more minor changes to make,” added White. “We
should have the pit out access road, in the second turn, repaved in the near
future. We will also be paving sections of the pit area.”
All County Construction provided the workforce and know-how to
complete this project. Over the years All County Construction has been a
staunch supporter of auto racing, including supporting Zach Shove’s efforts
on dirt and asphalt. They continue their sponsorships with a number of
active teams today.
“I know the racers will want to get on this new surface as soon as
the snows clear this winter. Right now I am tentatively looking at opening
the oval track season on May 21 and the drag strip on May 1,” stated White.
“Our plans will include at least one practice session, and possibly
two sessions to let the oval race teams determine their correct setups on
the new surface. Practices will probably be set for Friday May 14th and
possibly even May 7th.
Look for further updates in the weeks to come.
Spencer Speedway is located just fifteen minutes east of Rochester
, NY , along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson . Spencer Speedway is the
local “ NASCAR Place to Race” for upstate New York . Points earned each week
at Spencer are counted into the national NASCAR Whelen All-American Series
championship.
