HARLEY-DAVIDSON RENEWS TITLE SPONSORSHIP OF
MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND WHELEN MODIFIED TOUR EVENT AT
STAFFORD SPEEDWAY |
TSI Harley-Davidson has renewed their sponsorship of the prestigious
Memorial Day Weekend Whelen Modified Tour event at Stafford Motor Speedway.
The 19th Annual TSI Harley-Davidson Classic is scheduled for Friday, May 22
and will feature the Whelen Modified Tour along with Stafford’s five Whelen
All-American Series divisions. TSI Harley-Davidson has become an established
partner of premier events at Stafford, sponsoring a Camping World East
Series race from 2005-2007 and the TSI Harley-Davidson Classic last year.
The TSI Harley-Davidson Classic has developed into a must-see event for
fans, developing a reputation as one of the finest stops on the Whelen
Modified Tour calendar with sensational racing and dramatic finishes between
the some of the finest drivers the Whelen Modified Tour has to offer over
the past several seasons.
The 2003 TSI Harley-Davidson Classic came down to a battle of
Whelen Modified Tour champions Jerry Marquis and Todd Szegedy. Szegedy led
for much of the race and appeared poised to take the drive to victory lane,
but Marquis passed Szegedy on the final lap of the race for the win. 2004’s
event saw 5-time champion Tony Hirschman outduel Tour veteran Reggie
Ruggiero in the closing laps to secure a close victory, while the 2005 event
saw newly minted Tour champion Ted Christopher make an amazing charge
through the field over the final 50-laps of the race after making numerous
pit stops early in the race to correct his car’s handling. The 2006 edition
turned into a family duel for the win, with John Blewett, III using fresher
tires to take the lead from his brother Jimmy with 15 laps to go, while the
last two TSI Harley-Davidson Classic events have belonged to car owner Bob
Garbarino. Garbarino took the checkered flag in 2007 with Tour champion
Donny Lia behind the wheel and he won last year’s event with Chuck Hossfeld
holding off Szegedy and eventual 2008 Whelen Modified Tour champion Ted
Christopher over the closing laps.
“We’re happy to have TSI Harley-Davidson partnered with one of our premier
events for the fifth consecutive season,” said Mark Arute, SMS COO/GM. “TSI
Harley-Davidson has been a great partner to work with over the years, and we
always have a unique display of Harley-Davidsons pacing our feature fields.
TSI Harley-Davidson has been a committed partner to both the speedway and
our racers, and we hope to be able to continue our partnership for another
five years and beyond.”
