SUNOCO WORLD
SERIES OF SPEEDWAY RACING
THIS WEEKEND AT THOMPSON |
|
The
Sunoco World Series of Speedway Racing presented by XTRA MART will
be held at the Thompson International Speedway this Friday, Saturday
and Sunday. This three-day high speed extravaganza is a
one-of-a-kind auto racing event that brings nearly every type and
style of race car and race truck to one location for a season-ending
grand finale.
For 36 years the Sunoco World Series has drawn down the curtain on
Thompson’s racing season. It has grown over the years to where it
now includes fifteen different divisions of racing competition and
provides fans with a great weekend of racing and fun in the party
filled atmosphere.
Headlining the racing action is the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and
the incredible Super Modifieds of ISMA. Add to that the might
Midgets of NEMA, the N.E. Truck Series, Pro 4 Modifieds, Thompson’s
own NASCAR Whelen All-American “Super 6” divisions, SK Sunoco Lights
and a host of “outlaw” divisions and it quickly becomes a racing
weekend like no other.
Competitors come from the eastern half of the U.S. and Canada to be
part of this amazing weekend. Literally hundreds of race cars fill
the entire pit area of the Thompson complex and each race team
arrives at the speedway with dreams of ending their racing season
with a victory. Whelen Modified Tour fans will be on the edge of
their seats during the running of the Sunoco 150 as four drivers
have a chance to claim the coveted championship title. Bobby Santos,
Mike Stefanik, Ronnie Silk and Ted Christopher are all in the chase
for the WMT championship crown. U. S. Senate candidate, Linda
McMahon, will serve as the Grand Marshal of the event. She will
briefly address the fans and will then give the command for the
NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour drivers to start their cars for the
running of their 150-lap, championship determining, race.
Thompson’s unique ability to host such a huge event comes from the
hundreds of acres that make up the Speedway, Golf Course, Driving
Range, Banquet size restaurant and Lounge. The track rolls out the
red carpet for fans who take advantage of the free camping policy
for self-contained units and those who commute for each of the three
days of the event. An all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet is offered on
both Saturday and Sunday mornings and the traditional dinner and
dance is planned for Saturday evening.
Grandstands will open at 4:30 PM on Friday and at 9 AM on both
Saturday and Sunday. Tickets for the Sunoco World series are
available by calling the Thompson Speedway track office.
860-923-2280. Fans will find much more information, including the
day by day schedule of events, on the track’s web page
