ACTING WITHOUT THINKING
by Rev. Don Rivers

I took the opportunity this week to let one of our Chaplains share with you. Rev. Ray Pavkov supports our traveling chaplains when there is a hole to fill. He is an invaluable asset to what we do. Join me as we let Ray shares some of his thoughts, Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

CRASH! What?! Yup, just that quick, the unthinkable happened. What caused it? Was I at fault? Now what? Maybe you know what I am saying. Maybe you have been there too.

Let me explain - I was in a hurry, trying to do my very best to follow instructions; not thinking I would be responsible for a wreck… well here’s what happened.

Rushing down the pasta isle to pick up some things for supper, I realized I had forgotten to get the pasta sauce. So, I quickly swung my carriage around to the left, only to meet another shopper head on. Smash. Things went flying; including words like, “watch where you are going next time”. I tried my best to explain that I was in a hurry and was very sorry, but he continued to proclaim to anyone within hearing, just how dumb I was for not noticing that he was there too. I said I was sorry to the guy and moved on.

You have been there also; you go to the track with a plan. You work hard to setup the car, get it just right. You start the race with the anticipation of a great finish. Then it happens, crash. You were so focused on the goal you lost your sense of what was around you. You had a plan and were just trying to win the race. But now you sit there in a heap, lap 1, turn three, and you took a few of your competitors with you. How do you think they are going to see it?

That got me to thinking about the times in our spiritual life when we inadvertently cause a personal crash. Perhaps we are quick with a cutting reply of words; or, quick with our sharp actions and we wreck someone else. At the track I’ve also seen wrecks which were perhaps not so accidental when someone gets put into the wall. Usually, the first response is to get back or to get even. Sometimes it’s physical, but more often it’s just verbal.

   God’s Word tells us:

Proverbs 15:1, 18, 29 (GOD’S WORD Translation)
“A gentle answer turns away rage, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

   Reading further, the Bible continues:

“A hothead stirs up a fight, but one who holds his temper calms disputes.

How can we change our temper or make amends? What should we do? Again, God’s word tells us:

“The Lord is far from wicked people, but he hears the prayers of righteous people.”

Be quick to ask the Lord for patience & wisdom; and as much as possible, make it right with the other person. The other person may not want to hear from you, but you must make an effort to apologize and then, move on. Sometimes that isn’t easy, but God tells us:

Proverbs 16:7 (The Message) “When God approves of your life, even your enemies will end up shaking your hand.”

God approves of our making amends; saying we’re sorry. When we don’t, that only serves to make matters worse. We can lose our character and credibility with others who interact with us. If you have wrecked someone, or someone has wrecked you, apologize and quickly move on- with no retaliation, but rather with understanding. Ask God to help you through it, He will; I know.

   God Bless you. Rev. Ray

   THOUGHTS FROM THE ROAD

MOTORSPORTS 2011 ANOTHER GREAT SHOW - Our thanks go out to the entire crew of AARN for again putting together another great racing show. It was a great opportunity to meet and greet some fans, catch up with different teams, talk about plans for the coming season, and just to be out and about.

Saturday was an exciting day for the RWJM team, we held an autograph session that had the fans lined up. There were a few last minute changes in the lineup due to weather related issues, but we had a little something for everyone. Our thanks go out to the drivers that participated; Keith Rocco, NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National Champion, Justin Bonsignore, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Rookie of the Year, Eddie MacDonald, NASCAR K&N Pro Series and Camping World Truck Series driver, Rowan Pennink, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and Valenti Modified Racing Series driver and Max Zachem, Valenti Modified Series driver.

QUOTE OF THE SHOW - Longtime Modified driver Jamie Tomaino was at the show signing autographs but not in his traditional place at the Racing with Jesus Ministries booth, he was with a group of veterans remembering the races run at Flemington Speedway. His wife Cheryl stopped by during the autograph session and commented when she saw the host of young drivers we had.

“This is the HIP crowd; we’re out back with the broken hip crowd.”

WALKING AGAIN - The passage of scripture we used in Chapel Service on Sunday morning reminded me of something I saw on Saturday afternoon. Let me share a little; Peter and John approached the gate Beautiful at the Temple in Jerusalem and saw a lame man there asking for help. Peter stated; “money I do not have but I give you what I do have, in the name of Jesus, get up and walk.” And the man climbed to his feet and began to walk, he followed Peter and John into the Temple signing, dancing, rejoicing and praising God about his renewed ability to walk.

On Saturday Michael Pares walked into the booth, no cane, no walker, no help, just his own two, healed legs. Praise God! It wasn’t an easy road, but Michael made it with a little help from his friends. Michael sent this note along.

I want to thank everyone for your prayers, cards and support financially and physically during my recovery from 2 broken legs. You all helped me tremendously! It's been a long 7 month recovery but I am walking. I'm looking forward to going back to the races with my camera and seeing all of you again.

   God Bless,
   Michael Pares Sr
