MAKING PREPARATIONS
by Rev. Don Rivers

   There are times in our lives when we need to stop and prepare for a coming event. Last week we had to prepare for a pending storm that affected most of the East Coast. How well have we prepared for the storms of life? Have you put things in order so that when they come we will be able to stand? Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

   Each race we enter requires preparation, we need to be prepared or we cannot run to win. The car needs the right setup. The crew needs to be ready and available. The spare parts and tools need to assembled and packed. We need to get everything to the track. Then we need to get through practice before we are prepared to race.

   We can look at a life like a race, we can just let it happen or we can make preparations so that when events come we will be prepared to make adjustments. To live we need to prepare and be ready for whatever might come our way. To be able to stand strong and make it through.

   We read in Matthew’s Gospel about the wise and foolish builders; each had the opportunity to prepare and live life in a way that would enable them to withstand the coming storms. One chose to follow Christ, one chose not to. When the storms came, the one who chose to build on a solid foundation, Christ; was able to withstand the storm. The other one’s life came crashing down and the storms of life overwhelmed him.

   The lesson for us; make preparations while there is still time before the storms come and overwhelm us. The best way to be prepared is to choose to follow Christ. He promises to guide us, teach us, council us, help us along the right path.

   It is all too easy to procrastinate, wait until the pending storm is on the horizon and then start scurrying around, making last minute preparations, hoping to have enough time before we are overwhelmed. It is a common thought process, many people have tried it and lost. Take God at His word, He is worthy of your trust,

Isaiah 43:1-3a;

But now, this is what the LORD says--

he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
"Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.

When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.

For I am the LORD, your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;

   God created us and formed us and wants to be a part of our lives. We need to seek him our while he still can be found. Today is the day, now is the time for salvation. None of us know what tomorrow holds. None of us can speak with certainty about what lies ahead. There is a way for us to be confident we can withstand whatever comes our way, we need to trust our lives to God.

   Look at the promise we find in those verses from Isaiah, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”

   God will give us the strength and courage we need to withstand the storm. We need to prepare before the storm comes, we need to prepare while there is still time. Follow the encouragement of Paul and prepare to win the race.

1Corinthians 9:24-26; Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize?
Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training.
They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.
Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air.

Hebrews 12:1-3; Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses,
let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles,
and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus,
the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame,
and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men,
so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

   Prepare for the challenges Life has for us, turn your life over to Christ, He is worthy of our Trust and Faith. God Bless

   THOUGHTS FROM THE ROAD

   BRISTOL AND BEYOND - With a full car; Dan, Gary Dionne and Rick Riduca, we headed south for the WMT race at Bristol. For Gary and Rick it was the first time and like many say, until you have seen it in person you don't realize how awesome this place is.

   We had some special guests with us this week; we were joined by John Sines Jr, who along with Patrick provided special music at Chapel. We are excited about this relationship and where God will lead it. John is looking forward to partnering with us to provide some additional outreach.

   We met Joe Louis, a package of dynamite, who was filling in for Southern Tour Chaplain Kyle Froman. Our best wishes go out to Kyle and his wife as they await the arrival of their second child.

   Bristol was a great trip, albeit short, and I have much to share but at this point the battery is getting low, the power is out and I am at McDonald's using their wifi. Blessings to you and maybe next week we'll back at full power to get you updated.

   PARES FAMILY NEEDS OUR PRAYERS - We need to keep the Pares family in our prayers, they lost their house to flood and fire during the storm, everyone made it out alright but the challenge ahead will be difficult. I'll have more details next week how we can help them out.

   Suffice to say it has been a challenging weekend making preparations for the storm and the aftermath.
