The noise level around us keeps increasing. Everywhere we
go there is background noise that competes for our attention. It seems that
everyone wants us to notice them. The commercials on television get louder
and louder. It is a wonder we can hear the voice of God through all the
noise. Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
One of my favorite stores is Target, let me tell you why. No, it is
not that I am a fan of Juan Pablo or Ganassi Racing. The reason is it is
quiet; they do not play any music. I can think straight and not get
distracted!
Everywhere we go someone is competing for our attention and the
volume is getting turned up. Whether it is the tin can muffler or the 12
inch bass woofer it is even hard to drive down the street without the noise
on life drowning out your thoughts.
At the racetrack it is no different, although that is part of the
attraction, the sound of a race engine. But what about the other noise, the
announcer, the pit steward, the team radio, the series radio, to name a few.
There are all kinds of messages competing for our attention. How do we
filter them? Which ones do we listen to? Can we even hear them?
I have been doing some studying recently on listening to God. How
do we tune our attention to hearing God speak to us? Do you know that is one
of the most important things we can do in our lives? We need to be tuned in
to God and listen to His voice.
As I watch a race and listen to race control I wonder if the driver
is even listening. I hear the instructions and then watch as they are not
followed. Maybe the driver can’t hear them. Maybe the driver is ignoring
them. Maybe the driver thinks he knows better and wants to do things their
own way? Whatever the reason it usually takes the threat of a penalty to get
the driver’s attention.
I looked at how we respond to God and found some similarities
there. I think we treat listening to God the same way some drivers treat
listening to race control. Can we hear God? Are we ignoring Him? Do we think
our way is better?
Maybe we need to change that. David helps us understand how we
should seek out God.
Psalm 42:2, (NLV), My soul
is thirsty for God, for the living God. When will I come and meet with God?
Do we seek God out? Do we thirst for
God’s guidance and direction? Can we hear God’s voice through all the noise?
We need to develop an ear that hears the voice of God. Let’s commit
to learning together how we can develop that ear. Isaiah encourages us with
these words.
Isaiah 58:11, (NLV), The
Lord will always lead you.
He will meet the needs of your soul in the dry times and give strength to
your body.
You will be like a garden that has enough water, like a well of water that
never dries up.
Over the next few weeks we will look at how
we can develop a sense of hearing the voice of God. I am excited to take the
journey with you.
THOUGHTS
FROM THE ROAD
LEE USE OPENS THEIR FRIDAY NIGHT SCHEDULE
- This past Friday night Lee USA got things rolling and Bobby and Vinetta
were there to bring us this report.
Opening night at Lee USA SPEEDWAY 2013 and what a great night of
racing! If you were holding out because of the cool temperatures that’s
understandable, but the action was far from cool! Many new teams are entered
for the 2013 season and the drivers made themselves known.
The Lee Small Block Supers had a great car count, several new faces
and a new face in a different Modified. As many fans have got to know the
#21 with Wayne Helliwell behind the wheel but in 2013 Tommy Tombarello will
pilot the Owner Witkum car. The reason given was Helliwell will be handling
a heavy ACT race schedule this year and couldn’t commit to every Friday
night under the lights.
It was great to see #33 Billy Clement Jr in his Hobby Stock back at
Lee. There were several drivers still walking about the track not ready for
the opener, but should have things ready to fire up in the next couple of
weeks.
It was great for Vinetta and I to once again reunite with families,
talk about their very long winters and share some laughs right were we left
off.
Two announcements made at this drivers meeting, one I may be
rewriting at a later date, but time will tell. It was told by Bob Watson,
yes he is doing it again, calling the season short soon heading to the warm
temps of Florida . I don’t know who holds the record for come back
retirement tours Cher or Bob Watson? With the talent Bob has had at Lee USA,
and his great sense of humor certainly going to be missed at Lee. There have
been many names to walk through the gates of Lee that have impacted Lee in
great ways, and Bob is certainly up there with the best.
The other announcement is Debbie and Bob Yurko of Yurko Productions
will be video taping every Friday night. They will be providing DVD’s for
sale of the previous weeks action. Based on what they have done at Thompson
and Monadnock I think their DVD’s will be a popular item.
One up and coming driver from the Ironman, #07Travis Hollins, is
ready to contend for that championship! Great Job Travis taking his first
checkered flag for the 2013 season.
In the Small Block Supers it was #7 Ryan Garth taking home the
checkers for the Supers.
In the Hobby Stocks it must of felt like cruise night for #65 Jim
Piaseczny, once he was out front he stayed there with many car lengths lead
due to the great battle behind him.
In the Late Model Division this was a nose to nose battle front to
back. With the competition heavy, they all did a great job battling and put
the fans on the edge of their seats, it was hard to stay focused on one part
of the track with the action taking place.
With several drivers still putting the final touches on their cars
Lee should have an extremely large car count for the 2013 season. If you see
Vinetta or I stop by say hello, you can catch us in the stands or pits all
throughout the night ready to listen and pray about any concerns you may
have. God Bless! See you next Friday Night under the lights.
WATERFORD SURPRISES ONE OF THEIR OWN - What an awesome
jester by the racing community at Waterford Speedbowl. They got together and
built a race car for Steve Barrett who just returned from deployment in
Afghanistan. To go and defend our freedom he had to give up his hobby,
racing at the Bowl. Just before he left he had crashed his car and put off
fixing it until he returned.
The racers had another idea; they rebuilt the car and provided
everything he needed to go racing last Saturday night! A big thank you for a
job well done protecting us.
You can imagine the emotion as his wife took the microphone and
announced the surprise as the refurbished car rolled out of the pit area
with his name across the windscreen.
Great job remembering one of your own Waterford, you did racers
proud.
RACING ACROSS THE POND - I will be on vacation for the next
week, headed across the pond with my bride. For the first time in many years
I will be out of touch with most of the technology that keeps me in the
know. I think it will be a welcome break.
The Whelen Modified Tour will visit Monadnock and Rev.’s Dan, Ray
and Scott will take care of things, thanks guys. Also we will have a rookie
columnist next week as Rev. Ray Pavkov takes a shot at sharing with you. Let
them all know how much you appreciate them.
