WATERFORD
SPEEDBOWL BUDWEISER BLASTOFF
SUNDAY 4/7 RESULTS |
The
63rd season opener at Waterford Speedbowl wrapped up
Sunday with six main events as part of the track’s
Budweiser Blastoff Weekend. A total of 13 divisions
were on hand for the three-day event, culminating
with Sunday’s Valenti Modified Racing Series
feature, NEMA Midget race and NASCAR Whelen
All-American Series racing.
Sunday’s winners included Steve Masse of Bellingham,
MA in the 100-lap Valenti Modified Racing Series
event, the popular northeastern tour’s 10th
anniversary season opener. In NASCAR Whelen
All-American Series action Keith Rocco of Meriden
scored wins in both the SK Modified® and Bob Valenti
Auto Mall Late Model division races, the second
consecutive season he has opened the year with wins
in each division. Corey Hutchings of Salem was the
Street Stock winner and Garrett Denton of Hope
Valley, RI won the Mini Stock feature. Todd Bertrand
of Suffield took down a popular win in the
Northeastern Midget Association race.
Masse made a late race charge in the 100-lap Valenti
Modified Racing Series event to come out on top. He
started in 13th position and bided his time much of
the race. He began his march to the front of the
field following a lap-64 caution period for race
leader Richard Savary, who spun while working lapped
traffic.
Masse restarted the race in fifth position and used
another restart following a lap-83 yellow flag to
challenge for the top-three. He passed Rowan Pennink
for second position on lap-90 and was on leader Todd
Annarummo’s bumper by lap-92. The pair made contact
racing to lap-93 causing Masse to back off and
regain his momentum. He was back to Annarummo’s
bumper on lap-95 and made an outside bid for the
lead a lap later. After one lap side-by-side, Masse
completed the move out of turn two on lap-97 and
motored away the final three laps for the victory.
Annarummo placed second ahead of Anthony Nocella,
Pennink and Mike Holdridge.
The 63-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK
Modified® race was slowed by a total of seven
caution periods. Past track champion Ron Yuhas Jr.
brought the 26-car field to the green flag and
showed the way through lap-6. Rocco, who started in
third position, quickly moved to second position
before making an inside move on Yuhas to take over
command on lap-7.
Rocco was strong through the middle of the race to
hold on to the lead, however couldn’t shake the
tandem of Yuhas and Rob Janovic Jr. Rocco and Yuhas
raced hard for the top spot just after halfway
resulting in Yuhas making contact with the wall on
lap-39, slowing his charge, with Rocco continuing to
lead. Rocco stayed ahead of the field through a wild
incident on lap-54 when nearly half the field was
caught up in a wreck that started over a battle for
second position.
Rocco mastered the final restart and was able to
cruise to the victory over Yuhas and Janovic, who
each escaped the lap-54 melee. The win was Rocco’s
fourth consecutive Budweiser Blastoff weekend win
and 45th career victory in the division. Rocco is
the 2010 and 2011 division track champion and 2010
NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National Champion.
Rocco dominated the 50-lap NASCAR Whelen
All-American Series Bob Valenti Auto Mall Late Model
feature. He led the entire distance with only one
caution period on lap-4 slowing his pace. 2012
champion Dillon Moltz chased Rocco to the checkered
flag, but could not close in to seriously contend.
Bruce Thomas Jr. won a duel with Jeff Smith to take
third place.
Hutchings bolted out to a strong lead in the 30-lap
NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Street Stock
feature, but was tracked down by Chris Meyer under a
lengthy green flag run that closed the race. Meyer
was on Hutchings’ bumper with five laps remaining
then raced to his outside to make a bid for the win
over the final three laps. The two ran door-to-door
over the final laps and put on a thrilling finish
with Hutchings narrowly taking down the win. Only
one caution flag slowed the race.
Denton was impressive in the 30-lap NASCAR Whelen
All-American Series Mini Stock feature. He checked
out to a commanding lead after a lap-6 caution
period, the only of the race, and rolled to the
victory, the third of his career at the track.
Denton, age 16, beat out the most successful driver
in the division, Ken Cassidy Jr. of Lisbon, who
placed second.
Bertrand powered into the lead following the only
caution period on lap-10 of the NEMA Midget feature.
He raced inside early pace setter Anthony Marvuglio
of Massachusetts and went on to a popular win in the
series opener. Bertrand turned the fastest lap of
the day, a 13.05 second lap, during his run to
victory.
The Speedbowl returns to action for its first
regular show of the 2013 season next Saturday night.
A 6-division NASCAR Whelen All-American Series event
is scheduled to begin with qualifying at 5:00pm and
main events at 7:00pm. More information is available
