The
NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Icebreaker weekend at Thompson International
Speedway is under way with the Coors Light pole award going to seven-time
NWMT champion Mike Stefanik.
A field of 29 drivers made their bid for the top spot but it was the last
driver on the grid for time trials who posted the fastest lap. With a time
of 18.668 seconds, Stefanik bumped Ryan Preece to second, Rowan Pennink,
fastest in practice qualified third while Chuck Hossfeld and Ron Silk
completed the top five.
His 10th pole award at Thompson, it is Stefanik's 48th career pole overall.
"I'm still pretty hungry" smiled Stefanik after his qualifying run who may
have been slightly more motivated to win the pole after a friendly wager was
added. "I always give 100%, even if sometimes it doesn't look it. Everything
worked, everything clicked. Chris Our (car owner) has such a nice program,
there is just so much depth and so much knowledge in that team and I trust
Brad 100 percent. The car was great right off the truck. It's like a race in
a race."
The Coventry, RI driver will lead the field to green tomorrow in the hunt to
win his first Icebreaker since 2006. "It's a good package, I have a lot of
confidence, I know the car is fast and I just hope I don't let it down,"
said Stefanik. "I feel like I'm the weak link over there and being 54, I
know my days are numbered. I'm going to make the best of them while I'm
still here." Brad LaFontaine will handle crew chief duties for Stefanik who
is starting the season off where everyone wants to be- first. "A moment like
this only lasts a little bit because it is all about the race tomorrow. But
it will feel good tonight. I have to admit, it feels good."
Justin Bonsignore qualified sixth, Ron Yuhas, Jr seventh, defending NWMT
Champion Doug Coby eighth, Bobby Santos and Todd Szegedy the top ten.
Following post race inspection, Hossfeld's time was disallowed for an
apparent fuel issue. Hossfeld will start the Icebreaker 150 from the rear of
the field.
Scheduled to go green Sunday at approx. 3pm- if you can't be at Thompson,
