Two
of the best from the Race of Champions Asphalt
Modified Series are making their way down to Sophia,
North Carolina's Caraway Speedway this weekend for
the 12th Annual John Blewett III North-South
Shootout. This year's RoC champion, Chuck Hossfeld,
will be making his 10th North-South Shootout start
and Daren Scherer, who finished fourth in RoC
points, will be making his seventh appearance at the
prestigious year-end Modified event.
Hossfeld is a two-time RoC Series champion. He's a
three-time winner of the RoC 200, as well as a
seven-time winner on the NASCAR Whelen Modified
Tour. But Hossfeld only has two top five finishes in
his nine North-South Shootout starts. His goal is to
add at least another top five to his stats.
"Hopefully we come out of there with a win or a good
top three finish," Hossfeld said. "It would make the
trip not only a fun one, but a successful one."
One would think that this race would put a lot of
pressure on the drivers for many reasons, one of the
big ones being that they want to represent their
respective series as well as possible. But not
according to Hossfeld.
"I feel like we are going to run strong, so having
said that I don't feel any pressure," said Hossfeld.
"When you're confident you really don't feel
pressure."
Scherer, who made all of his Shootout appearances
before the event was moved to Caraway in 2011, is
just as confident that he can be a contender.
"I don't see why we can't run up front," said
Scherer. "I've always wanted to win that one."
The North-South Shootout, which annually brings in
drivers from many different Modified tours and local
tracks all along the Eastern seaboard, has been won
by a northern driver the last four years and all
three years since the race has been moved to
Caraway.
Both Hossfeld and Scherer want to be the
fifth-straight driver from the north to earn the
Shootout win.
"I like to think that when the Northern guys go we
have a good presence there," said Hossfeld.
"I always like going down there. It's a good event
to go to and I'm looking forward to going back down
there again."
The 12th Annual North-South Shootout event will
feature the Modifieds as well as the PASS South
Super Late Models, Southeast Limited Late Model
Series, USAC Midgets, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks and
Legends Cars. Shootout weekend kicks off on
Thursday, October 30 with practice for all divisions
at Caraway Speedway. Racing action gets underway on
Friday, October 31 with qualifying and several
feature events. The John Blewett III North-South
Shootout feature will take center stage on Saturday,
November 1 along with PASS and more.
