THE SBM 125 MODIFIED OPEN RETURNS TO STAR SPEEDWAY
IN 2016 AFTER ONE YEAR HIATUS

It's back and it is going to be even bigger than in 2014, when the quarter-mile Star Speedway on Route 27 in Epping, New Hampshire held their highest paying race in the track's long and storied history. It was also one of the best.

Today an agreement was reached between the Webber family and the Northeast Race Cars Tri-Track Open Modified Series representatives, Jim Schaefer and Dick Williams to present SBM V on Saturday night, July 30th, and this premiere Tour-Type Modified Open event will now pay a minimum of $10,000 to win!

SBM IV was a race held in June of 2014 that fans are still talking about to this day. Numerous drivers raced for the lead in the closing laps before Jon McKennedy raced to the victory and a $6,175 payday. Last place in that event paid $1,650 in large part because of race fan donations that in the end made it the highest paying race in Star history. In fact, a 13th place finish in SBM IV paid a whopping $4,141.

This 2016 version of the SBM 125 comes on the heels of a 2014 event that was dubbed, "One of the top ten best Modified races that I have ever seen," by the voice of the Modifieds for decades at tracks from Maine to Florida, Ben Dodge. And with a running start on obtaining sponsorship through the Northeast Race Cars Tri-Track Series, it will almost certainly exceed the payoff from the 2014 event because of the expected support from sponsors and race fans alike.

"I am so excited to see the Modifieds return to Star for SBM V," said track promoter Bob Webber Jr., who helped finalize the deal just today. "It was difficult not having the SBM last year. Both fans and competitors wanted it so badly, but the scheduling just didn't work in our favor.

"Every competing Modified driver that I have seen since that last race has been asking. Fans have been asking, and I have been working to bring the Open Show concept SBM back to where it all started. I am thrilled that we were able to make it happen for 2016, and with a summer date, this will surely be a marquee event of the 2016 season, and not just at Star Speedway."

Defending race winner Jon McKennedy was eying a different venue for July 30 in 2016, but those plans have changed since he heard the news today. The Chelmsford, Mass., standout considers Star to be his home track.

"That is the best news I've heard all year and the year is almost over," McKennedy said upon learning of the SBM 125's return. "To have the SBM at the top of my list of races to run in next season is awesome. Just awesome. I can't wait to get back there and try to win it for a third time."

More details of the 125-lap SBM V, on Saturday night July 30 will be finalized soon and can be found on the track website: www.star-speedway.com, on the Official Star Speedway facebook page, or through the Northeast race Cars Tri-Track Open Modified Series facebook and web pages following the Christmas holiday season.
