ADAMS WINS
BEFORE RAIN FALLS AT BOWMAN GRAY

Michael Adams grabbed the first checkered of the season at Bowman Gray Stadium. Mother Nature took the second.

The very first race of 2016 was a scorcher in the Yates Grading & Paving Sportsman Series. Kevin Neal of Winston-Salem started on the pole with John Holleman of Winston-Salem starting on the outside front row. Neal sped out as the green flag dropped and was able to hold the inside line.

John Holleman challenged Neal during a double-file restart but was unsuccessful and fell back. Michael Adams of Yadkinville made a smooth pass past Neal for the lead on lap 13.

Holleman attempted the same outside-row challenge against Adams but again couldn’t make it stick. As the two fought for the lead, Zack Clifton of Walkertown took advantage of the situation to dash to the inside of both of them. But Clifton’s lead was short-lived as Adams powered past him and reclaimed the lead on lap 35.

“Last year was our year. This year’s going to be our year even better,” said Adams after grabbing the checkered. Zack Clifton ended up finishing second, with Holleman taking third.

Adams not only had the special distinction of winning the first race of the season, but he also received his victory trophy from Governor Pat McCrory – who served as Grand Marshal for the event.

In the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series, the first 40 laps of the Hayes Jewelers 200 was also a wild contest. Tim Brown of Tobaccoville led the first few laps until Danny Bohn of Huntersville hammered his bumper and stole the top spot away.

Bad luck struck for Bohn as leaking fluid forced him to pit. He lost several laps, but then good luck smiled on Bohn: the new Lucky Dog rule allowed him to regain his lost laps over several cautions.

Then the skies opened up and rained, leaving Tim Brown and Burt Myers on the front row. The race will be completed next week in the continuation of the Hayes Jewelers 200 presented by 100.3 KISS FM.

Also on the schedule is another 40-lapper for the Yates Grading & Paving Sportsman Series, a 20-lapper for the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series, and two 15-lappers for the McDowell Stadium Stock Series. Rain checks from April 30 will be honored then.

Gates open at 6:00 for practice, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
