WILL THOMAS TAKES HOME WINNER'S LAURELS IN STEWART AGENCY / FARMER'S INSURANCE 75 PRESENTED BY JIM MOSS BUILDERS IN FERRIS MOWERS RACE OF CHAMPIONS ASPHALT MODIFIED SERIES FUELED BY SUNOCO RETURN TO LAKE ERIE SPEEDWAY

On Saturday, especially at the conclusion of the Ferris Mowers Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Series fueled by Sunoco feature at Lake Erie Speedway in North East, Pennsylvania, many people were asking, “Who is Will Thomas?” Thomas of Sharpsville, Pa., made his asphalt modified debut with the Series in 2015 at Lancaster (N.Y.) National Speedway in the U.S. Open, before running the Queen City Clash this in May at Lancaster. At Lake Erie, Thomas is a master, earning 3 Late Model track championships. After the track shelfed it’s weekly racing program, Thomas ventured into the dirt racing arena, but on Saturday night, in just his third Race of Champions start on a track that hasn’t run a stock car race in two years, he found himself holding the trophy in victory lane for the Stewart Agency / Farmer’s Insurance 75 presented by Jim Moss Builders.

“This is pretty awesome,” smiled Thomas from victory lane. “After Lancaster earlier this year, I wasn’t sure we could get the hang of this and then we enlisted the help of some veteran Modified folks (former driver Kenny Troyer and veteran spotter Greg Aumann) and here we are. It’s an incredible turn around and to beat the guys we did, well that’s just unreal. I’m so proud of all my guys, thankful for my wife Tammy. It’s surreal.”

Daren Scherer led the field to the green, but Jimmy Zacharias took the led and showed the way for the first 37 circuits before losing the lead to Daryl Lewis, Jr., on a restart. Lewis then paced the field until third place starter Matt Hirschman, who is the defending Series champion, found his way to the lead moving around Lewis and pulling away before a single file restart regrouped the field. Thomas, who had worked his way forward from the 7th starting position moved to 2nd and then passed Hirschman for first to lead the final 10 laps.

Patrick Emerling of Orchard Park, N.Y., regained the point lead with a second place finish. Zacharias finished third.

Hirschman and Bryan Sherwood rounded out the top-five.

Hossfeld posted a series leading fourth consecutive fast time in the Timed Hot Lap session to establish the heat race line ups with a time of 14.519 seconds (92.982 mph).

The next event for the Race of Champions is Thursday, June 30 at Lancaster (N.Y.) National Speedway with the running of the Ole’ Boy Cup II.
