PATRICK EMERLING CAPTURES HIS FIRST NWMT WIN
AT 'THE LAST GREAT COLOSSEUM'
Emerling Fastest at World Fastest Half Mile Track by Denise DuPont

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour (NWMT) headed to the mountains and southern heat for their yearly visit to Bristol Motor Speedway (BMS).There were twenty-seven teams that made the trip to the half-mile high banked track. Again this year the bottom groove on the turns was treated with sticky adhesive (PJ1). During practice drivers learned that if you straddled the sticky surface then you quickly spun. There was no exception for those that scored fast circuits. Burt Myers of Cove, NC and Patrick Emerling from Orchard Park, NY both had their turn at being fastest on the track and soon after spinning with the aid of the PJ1. Emerling was able to pull away while Myers was not as lucky. Myers clipped the outside wall breaking his right front suspension. As he rode the soft safety walls it was damaged. We had a long break in practice action while track crew made repairs.

Emerling was strong during practice and qualifying. He started on the pole with Chase Dowling of Roxbury, CT on his outside. Emerling went forward leading 148 of 150 laps and taking home the Bush’s Beans ‘150’ win. "It's just a dream come true," said Emerling in victory lane.' “I was very comfortable with it. We had a good car here last year and we set it up identical this year. We only run a handful of the Whelen Tour races and to come down here and win practice, catch the pole and lead every single lap, it's an incredible feeling for us being a part time team."

Doug Coby of Milford, CT qualified ninth and his persistence found him in the runner up position when the checkers flew. “This has not been our best speedway. We made the right changes to start the race and we made the right adjustments during the break. It is a tough speedway to race a modified at. I was trying to be smart and also aggressive and at the end have a car that would hopefully win the race. We just tried to maintain our run with him. Then he (Emerling) pulled away from me at the end. Leaving here with a second was our best career finish here. We were one shy again at the end.”

Justin Bonsignore from Holtsville, NY time trialed fourth and finished the race in third position. The regrouping strategy of the #51 team seems to have worked as each race they get stronger. “It was great to finally finish a race here at Bristol after the last couple of years.” Confessed Bonsignore. “We were a little too tight the first run. We were just a little too free to run with the 07 and 2. All and all it was a good day for us. We were happy with our efforts.”

Chase Dowling and Ryan Preece rounded out the top five finishers at BMS. Andy Seuss was sixth, followed by Rowan Pennink, Ronnie Williams, Bobby Santos and Matt Swanson for the top ten..

The Bush's Beans 150 will air on NBCSN Saturday August 26 at 3 p.m. ET.

The NWMT returns to racing at Seekonk Speedway on Saturday August 26, with the running of the Seekonk 150.
